OPINION:
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, Sen. Mitt Romney, Rep. Liz Cheney and the rest can try all they want to erase Donald Trump from political history books; they can try to purge his policies, they can waste tax dollars and taxpayers’ time on impeachment after impeachment, they can bash his base — they can even try to sic the criminal court hounds his way.
But the purging won’t work.
Neither Trump nor his fan base is going quietly any time soon.
“President Trump is still liable for everything he did while in office,” said McConnell, after Trump was acquitted, again, on, again, made-up, fabricated, foolishly fashioned impeachment charges. “He didn’t get away with anything yet. We have a criminal justice system in this country. We have civil litigation.”
The statement was aimed at sending a stern warning Trump’s way about his need to stay silent, stay away from the political world, stand down his influence among the people — or else.
It was a threat. It was meant to intimidate. It was supposed to send Trump into good obedient solitude.
It didn’t do what it was supposed to do.
“Mitch is a dour, sullen and unsmiling political hack and if Republican senators are going to stay with him, they will not win again,” Trump said, in a lengthy statement. “He will never do what needs to be done, or what is right for our country. Where necessary and appropriate, I will back primary rivals who espouse Making America Great Again and our policy of America First. We want brilliant, strong, thoughtful and compassionate leadership.”
In other words: Bite me, Mitch.
And that indeed is the message of the deplorables of the country to entrenched, elitist, Republican-In-Name-Only GOPers who would have the four years of Trump — and more to truth, Trump’s America First acts of sovereignty — whisked away like a puff of smoke, never to be seen again.
America’s battle for her soul, as President Joe Biden likes to put it, is real. It’s more than political — it’s bigger than the next election, or even the next or next after that. It’s a fight for God-given rights versus government control; it’s a war for capitalism and individual freedom over socialism and collectivist.
Trump took that war to the enemy, put a face to many in the enemy’s camps.
And his army of deplorables, ignited, inspired and emboldened by his own tough leadership style, aren’t simply going to go back to their homes, wait for their coronavirus stimulus dollars and let the far left destroy this country.
This party is only getting started.
