CHICAGO (AP) - A man was killed and another injured when an awning at an off-track betting site in Chicago collapsed under the weight of snow, authorities said Wednesday.
The men were on a patio at Club Hawthorne Corliss in the city’s Pullman neighborhood when the awning collapsed. A 59-year-old man was able to crawl from under the awning on his own, according to the Chicago Fire Department. A 54-year-old man had to be rescued by firefighters.
Both were taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where the 54-year-old, who hasn’t been identified, died. The 59-year-old was reported in fair-to-serious condition.
The main building was unaffected by the collapse, but the intact part of the awning was pulled down by firefighters, officials said. An employee for Club Hawthorne Corliss declined to comment when reached by telephone.
Chicago has been blanketed with snow over several days, with accumulation reaching two feet in some areas of the city. The roofs of several buildings, many 100 years old or older, have collapsed under the weight of the snow, and fire officials are warning more roof failures may occur.
