After a winter storm brought snow, freezing temperatures and widespread power outages to the Dallas region, professional sporting events in North Texas have been postponed to conserve energy.
The NHL announced that for the second straight night, the Stars postponed a matchup with the Nashville Predators at the request of Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson. The Mavericks game scheduled for Wednesday has also been postponed, according to The Athletic.
On Monday, before the Stars game was postponed, American Airlines Center officials said they would implement “measures to decrease power consumption to the minimum needed to host Dallas Stars and Dallas Mavericks games,” including “turning off exterior lighting, digital message boards, limiting concession operations and eliminating other amenities inside the building.”
The American Airlines Center is located on the same power grid as local hospitals and the convention center.
“We need those up. I don’t know the status of that grid, but frankly, the Stars game is not critical infrastructure. It’s just not,” a spokesperson for Mayor Johnson said.
