MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - A winter storm is expected to hit Tennessee and parts of other states on Sunday, bringing a possibility of several inches of snow.
The National Weather Service in Memphis said Saturday that the storm is expected to hit eastern Arkansas, western Tennessee and northern Mississippi on Sunday and Monday.
Slick conditions persisted in Tennessee on Saturday morning, as a multiple-car crash involving more than 20 vehicles on a highway in Nashville caused some injuries.
Forecasters said 1 to 6 inches (2.5 to 15 centimeters) of snow are possible in and around Memphis, along with freezing rain and sleet. Travel could become hazardous to impossible, the weather service said.
“The cold wind chills as low as 10 below zero could result in hypothermia if precautions are not taken,” said an advisory issued by the weather service in Memphis on Saturday.
Western Kentucky is also expected to get snow on Monday, though that forecast calls for around 4 inches (10 centimeters) of snow.
The crash in Nashville halted traffic along I-24 around for about three hours Saturday morning. The roadway was reopened around 11 a.m. The Nashville Fire Department said it transported 12 people to hospitals, though most were for minor injuries.
Memphis and surrounding areas already experienced an ice and snow storm Wednesday and Thursday that has frozen trees and left a layer of snow on front yards and other grassy areas. Crews have been applying sand and salt to roads to keep them clear of ice and snow. Officials fear ice accumulation on trees could cause them to fall on power lines, causing outages.
