OPELIKA, Ala. (AP) - Alabama officials have arrested a former jail guard, saying he illegally smuggled cell phones and phone accessories to an inmate in return for bribes from the inmate’s relatives.

Lee County sheriff’s deputies announced Wednesday that they had arrested 27-year-old D’Mario Jones of Columbus, Georgia, on two counts of promoting prison contraband.

Jones was working full-time at the Lee County Detention Center when the alleged incidents took place. The sheriff’s office said other jail guards “played a significant role” in discovering what Jones was doing and identifying other people involved. Deputies said more arrests are expected.

Jones’ bail is set at $10,000. It’s unclear if he has a lawyer to speak for him.
