OPINION:
Gina Carano, the star of Disney’s “The Mandalorian” was fired by the global giant for implying on social media being a Republican in 2021 is similar to being Jewish during Germany’s Nazi occupation.
Yes, the tweet may have been offensive. But Hollywood stars tweet offensive things all the time – just look at Kathy Griffin’s or Sean Penn’s Twitter feeds. Reporters for the last four years routinely used overwrought Holocaust analogies to define the Trump administration, all with no backlash.
The difference: Ms. Carano is an outspoken conservative – so the woke mob had to come after her as #FireGinaCarano trended on social media yesterday. In addition to losing her job with Lucasfilm, a division of Disney, she was also dropped by her Hollywood agent.
A spokesperson with Lucasfilm said in a statement Ms. Carano’s “social media posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable.”
What’s “abhorrent and unacceptable” is Disney’s handling of the situation. After all, the media company just filmed “Mulan” in a Chinese city with actual concentration camps. In the film’s credits Disney thanked the Chinese Communist Party for their participation.
It’s “abhorrent and unacceptable” Disney is more concerned with its actors’ thoughtless social media posts than calling out oppressive regimes around the world.
But I guess this is where an overly woke crowd takes us.
Pay no mind to the estimated 1 million Uighurs and other Turkic Muslim minorities being forced into so-called reeducation camps at the hands of the CCP in the name of ethnic cleansing. Pay no heed to the forced sterilizations of Uighur women in that region of China. But by all means, let’s destroy one women’s livelihood because of a political social media post.
What Ms. Carano’s firing demonstrates is Disney’s willingness to prioritize communist values over American values. Punish freedom of speech, crush dissent, turn a blind eye to human rights violations.
There’s a new era of McCarthyism being ushered into the U.S. by woke progressives and championed by U.S. corporations, and it’s absolutely chilling.
