LAS VEGAS (AP) - Las Vegas police said a man who exchanged gunfire with them died Tuesday after he barricaded himself in a flaming apartment building.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said officers responded to a report of a domestic disturbance at the Milan Apartment Townhomes in south Las Vegas.

When they arrived, officers called for a woman they located on the second-floor landing of an apartment to come toward them. As that happened, the suspect came out of the apartment and shot once with his firearm, Metropolitan Police Department Capt. Sasha Larkin said.

Law enforcement then returned fire, and the suspect went inside the apartment. The woman was safely removed from the scene, police said.

Another exchange of gunfire ensued, and black smoke began rising from the apartment, police said.

Clark County Fire Department workers extinguished most of the fire. Las Vegas SWAT officers then entered the apartment, where they found the suspect dead, police said.

The man has not yet been identified, and it is unclear how he died.

Las Vegas police said they would release more details about the exchange of gunfire later this week.

A determination of how the man died is part of an ongoing investigation, police said.
