ATLANTA (AP) - Two Democrats are advancing to a March 9 runoff in a special election to fill a vacant state House seat in suburban Atlanta.
Former state Rep. Stan Watson led the six candidates in Tuesday’s voting, with former Secretary of State candidate Angela Moore finishing second. Both will face off to fill the House District 90 seat, which includes parts of DeKalb, Henry and Rockdale counties.
Watson won 28% of about 3,000 votes, while Moore won 17%.
Finishing further behind were Diandra Hines, Greg Shealey, Joel Thibodeaux and Ed Williams.
Voters in Fayette, Pike, Spalding and Upson counties chose Republican Marie Greene Broder as their new district attorney over Democrat Dexter Wimbish, giving Broder 73% of the vote. Former District Attorney Ben Coker was appointed a superior court judge by Gov. Brian Kemp.
House District 90 had been represented since 2005 by Democrat Pam Stephenson, who resigned in September. Because Stephenson won the Democratic primary and faced no opposition in the general election, only a Democratic primary will be held to fill the vacancy.
