Reports emerged over the weekend that Washington made an offer to the Detroit Lions for quarterback Matthew Stafford, only for the team to accept a package from the Los Angeles Rams instead. Though Washington’s offer was described as “substantial,” details were sparse.
But now thanks to a report from Sports Illustrated, we now know what Washington offered.
Washington was willing to give up a first-round pick and a third-round pick in this year’s draft for Stafford, the sports magazine reported. Before the Rams swooped in late Saturday, Washington and Carolina were the “favorites” to land the quarterback.
The Rams ultimately offered more: Los Angeles agreed to send two first-rounders (2022, 2023), a third-rounder (2021) and quarterback Jared Goff.
Washington’s picks would have given Detroit more immediate help as the team holds the 19th overall pick. But the Lions preferred the pair of first-rounders, even though they won’t convey until later seasons.
Stafford was seen as a logical option for Washington as the team is searching for an experienced quarterback to help them take the next step after a surprising 7-9 playoff season. Washington also recently hired the executive that drafted Stafford first overall in 2009, general manager Martin Mayhew.
With Stafford now off the table, Washington will have to look elsewhere to fill its quarterback need.
