PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - The Portland City Council will hold a public meeting Monday and potentially vote on a proposal to create a new historic district covering nearly half of Munjoy Hill.

Munjoy Hill is a longtime working-class neighborhood with ocean views, the Portland Press Herald reported.

The proposal would add historic protections for 376 parcels, or 88% of the properties in the district, limiting exterior renovations and creating restrictions to demolish buildings.

The remaining 51 parcels in the district would be designated as noncontributing structures and could be demolished.

Advocates say the proposal would preserve the history of the neighborhood and help slow the rapid redevelopment of the area.

Opponents of the proposal worry that it could make it more difficult and expensive to maintain their properties and limit investment and housing development.

Mayor Kate Snyder declined to state her position on the proposal.

“I’m going to wait until we have our discussion on Monday,” Snyder said.
