STOUGHTON, Mass. (AP) - A driver charged with attacking a Massachusetts State Police trooper who had pulled him over was held without bail at his arraignment Monday pending, a hearing to determine whether he is a danger to society.
Devin Fuller, 29, was arraigned in Stoughton District Court on charges including assault with intent to murder and assault and battery on a police officer in connection with the confrontation on Route 24 in Randolph on Saturday. He’s accused of pushing the trooper into traffic, punching him and reaching for his service weapon,
Not guilty pleas were entered on his behalf.
The trooper clocked Fuller traveling at 81 mph in a 55-mph zone, police said.
He refused to leave his car, so the trooper pulled him out, police said.
Fuller struck the trooper before tackling him to the ground and driving his face into the pavement, according to the police account. The trooper was pushed into the path of an oncoming vehicle, which had to swerve away.
When an off-duty trooper saw what was happening and pulled over to help, Fuller drove away, authorities said. His car was later found abandoned and Fuller was caught after fleeing on foot into a wooded area.
The car also had drugs in it, prosecutors said.
Fuller’s lawyer, Moya Gibson, said her client was afraid for his safety and didn’t want to get out of his car until another trooper was on the scene to witness events, The Patriot Ledger reported.
“He was very concerned about the aggressive nature of the trooper,” Gibson said. “He was concerned about the potential for violence.”
The trooper, whose name was not made public, was treated at the hospital for bruises and cuts.
Fuller is due back in court Wednesday.
