Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger said during his press conference Thursday that the Steelers’ game against the Cleveland Browns on Monday night will likely be his last at Heinz Field.
“I don’t ever speak in definites or guarantees,” Roethlisberger said. “That’s just not what I’ve ever done or who I am. But looking at the bigger picture, I would say all signs are pointing to this could be it.”
His admission isn’t a surprise. Some thought he would retire after last season and since returning for 2021, the speculation has been that this would be his final year in the NFL. The 39-year-old signal-caller has struggled this season, posting near-career-lows in touchdown rate, yards per attempt and quarterback rating.
Roethlisberger, a near-lock to be a Hall of Famer, is a two-time Super Bowl champion and has thrown for more than 63,000 yards and 416 touchdowns in his 18-year career.
“I’ve been so blessed to play in front of the best fans in all sports at the best venue,” Roethlisberger said. “What better way to have a last regular-season game than ‘Monday Night Football’ against a division opponent.”
If 2021 is the last ride for Roethlisberger, he could end his career in Baltimore against the Ravens in Week 18. That game could have playoff implications for both teams — something he was quick to point out Thursday, noting the Steelers still have a small chance to win the AFC North and play at Heinz Field in the postseason.
