Former President Donald Trump ripped into the U.S. women’s national soccer team on Thursday after they took home a bronze medal, blaming “Leftist Maniacs” for the team not winning gold at the Tokyo Olympics.
The comments, which came in a press release, are the latest shot at the team from the former president, whose beef extends back to at least 2019 when he got into a public spat with star Megan Rapinoe.
Trump again took a shot at Rapinoe, saying the “woman with the purple hair played terribly” and accused her of spending too much time on politics rather than soccer. Rapinoe scored two goals in the United States’ 4-3 win over Australia Thursday to capture bronze.
“If our soccer team, headed by a radical group of Leftist Maniacs, wasn’t woke, they would have won the Gold Medal instead of the Bronze,” Trump said in a statement. “Woke means you lose, everything that is woke goes bad, and our soccer team certainly has.
“There were, however, a few Patriots standing. Unfortunately, they need more than that respecting our Country and National Anthem. They should replace the wokesters with Patriots and start winning again.”
The U.S. women’s team did not kneel during the national anthem at the Olympics.
