CONCORD, N.H. (AP) - The New Hampshire House on Friday approved a bill that would raise the age from 65 to 70 for workers’ compensation for heart and lung disease in firefighters .
Supporters of the bill said more firefighters are retiring later.
“Whether a firefighter retires young or later in life should not determine their eligibility for this coverage,” Rep. Tim Soucy, D-Concord, said in a statement.
Opponents of the bill said the change will lead to more claims for workers’ compensation and increased insurance costs for municipalities, and that it doesn’t do a good enough job of addressing future expenditures.
The bill now heads to the Senate.
