Tom Brady continues to break records — on and off the field.
A signed 2000 Playoff Contenders rookie card sold for $2.25 million Friday night, shattering a record another Brady card set less than a month ago for the most expensive football trading card. The previous Brady rookie card sold for $1.32 million in March.
The latest big-time sale for a Brady card came after 67 bids during the Lelands 2021 Spring Classic Auction. Bidding began at $75,000 and skyrocketed from there.
“I wasn’t shocked [by the price], but I was certainly surprised,” Lelands President Mike Heffner told ESPN. “I know the market is headed upward, especially with rare and desirable cards such as that one, but I didn’t really anticipate it. I had an inkling just feeling the performance of the other cards over the past month, it was certainly a possibility, but these modern cards are definitely for real.”
Brady won his seventh Super Bowl in February and first with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Brady signed a new deal with the Buccaneers to a new deal to keep him in Tampa through 2022.
The trading card market as a whole has increased in value as collectors see cards as a potential investment opportunity. This newest record is just another rise in a pattern of big spending.
