CHICAGO (AP) - A man suspected in the fatal shooting of a 7-year-old girl Chicago girl is expected to survive being shot several times by a police officer who was trying to arrest him, authorities said.

The officer shot the man, whose name hasn’t been released, several times in the arm on Thursday while the man was trying to steal a family’s car on the Eisenhower Expressway after crashing his own while fleeing, police Supt. David Brown said.

The man was taken to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, department spokesman Tom Ahern said.

The man was wanted in the killing of Jaslyn Adams, who was shot Sunday while sitting in her father’s car at a McDonald’s drive-thru on the city’s West Side, Brown said. Her father, Jontae Adams, was seriously wounded in the attack.

Investigators had the man under surveillance on Thursday and saw him get into a car and drive off, Brown said. As he tried to elude them, the man drove onto the expressway west of the city’s business district. After he crashed his vehicle, the man tried to carjack a family traveling in the same direction. Police confronted him and an officer shot him several times, Brown said.

State police said the suspect also fired shots, but Brown said that wasn’t clear.

“We don’t know if the offender shot back. We can’t confirm that at this point,” Brown said.

Investigators recovered two guns at the scene that they believe belonged to the suspect, he said.

The shooting is being investigated by the Civilian Office of Police Accountability, which probes all shootings involving Chicago police officers, Brown said.
