TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - New Jersey’s top motor vehicle official has been tapped to become an assistant defense secretary, Gov. Phil Murphy confirmed Friday in a statement.
Motor Vehicle Commission Chief Administrator Sue Fulton will join President Joe Biden’s administration as assistant secretary of defense for manpower and reserve affairs, according to the Democratic governor.
Murphy named Fulton to the MVC post in 2018. She’s a former Army captain and was a member of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point’s first class to admit women. She served as a signal officer in the Army, as well as a platoon leader, staff officer and company company before being honorable discharged.
In 2011, she was tapped by President Barack Obama to serve on the West Point Board of Visitors and went on to become the first woman to graduate from West Point to chair the board.
The Pentagon post is responsible for coordinating, directing and planning for active and reserve members.
Fulton is the second New Jersey Cabinet official to join the Biden administration. In December, Murphy announced Human Services Commissioner Carole Johnson was leaving to join the White House’s COVID-19 response team.
