ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) - A 16-year-old boy was charged with second-degree murder in the fatal attempted carjacking of a 71-year-old man near Rochester this month.

The teenager is accused of shooting Richard Sciascia of Irondequoit in the chest during a carjacking attempt in suburban Gates on April 7, part of a string of similar crimes in the area.

The teenager was arraigned Thursday and was being held without bail. A judge will determine whether he will face charges as a juvenile in family court.

The Associated Press is not identifying the teenager while it is being determined how the murder charge will be handled in court.

The county public defender’s office declined comment Friday.

Police in Gates have said 14 carjackings have been reported in the Rochester area since March 28, and all are believed to be linked.
