BOSTON (AP) - A 25-year-old Uber driver has been charged with sexually assaulting a female passenger, Boston police said Tuesday.
Sonpreet Singh, of Somerville, surrendered to police on Sunday after a woman told detectives on April 14 that she’d been assaulted by a driver for a ride-hailing service, police said.
Singh is expected to be arraigned in Brighton District Court on a charge of indecent assault and battery on a person over 14.
NBC 10 Boston reports Singh had made suggestive comments throughout the ride to the victim and then reached into the back seat and grabbed her breasts. The station reports she then punched him in the face before exiting the vehicle.
Police say they were able to identify Singh with information provided by the victim from her Uber app.
His lawyer, Vikas Dhar, told the television station that his client is a “hard-working young man with no prior criminal convictions” and looks forward to a trial.
A spokesperson for Uber told The Boston Globe that Singh no longer has access to the ride-hailing app.
“What’s been reported is deeply troubling,” the company said in a statement to the newspaper. “We thank local law enforcement for their swift action.”
