MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Vermont’s unemployment rate dropped one-tenth of percentage point in March to 2.9%, the state Labor Department announced Friday.
Nationally, the March rate was 6%, down two-tenths of a percentage point from February.
There were 33,818 Vermonters filing for unemployment benefits at the end of last week, Vermont Labor Commissioner Michael Harrington said in a written statement. The state reported an increase of 1,600 new jobs in the last month, bringing the total number of Vermont jobs to 288,700, he said. “Additionally, there are more than 6,000 open jobs posted in Vermont Job Link waiting for applicants,” Harrington said.
This highlights the growing demand for talented and dedicated workers to help businesses recover from the pandemic, he said.
Around Vermont, the jobless rate ranged from 2.5% in Northfield-Waitsfield to 4.5% in Derby.
