Eagle-eyed viewers caught CNN putting a Redskins logo down the memory hole this week for its “Fight for the White House: Joe Biden’s Long Journey” documentary.
The network did not respond to Fox News’ Joseph A. Wulfsohn when asked why a red cap worn by Hunter Biden decades ago was altered to hide the iconic football team’s former logo, although an explanation was offered to The Washingtonian.
“As with any biographical documentary, we ask the subject for photos and videos,” a CNN source told the website via email. “We received this picture and many others from the Biden campaign, and any additional inquiries should be sent their way. Future airings will include the original photo.”
A campaign aide for the Democrat’s campaign ultimately told Fox that copyright concerns prompted them to provide CNN with an altered image.
“[It’s] a very common practice on campaigns,” the aide said.
Team owner Dan Snyder oversaw the logo’s retirement in July after years of backlash by activists. The organization now goes by Washington Football Team.
“CNN or the DNC altered the image to remove the offensive (they assume) logo,” media watchdog NewsBusters reported Wednesday while noting the image’s inclusion during a Democratic National Convention video last month. “CNN journalists and execs, could we please get this cleared up?”
The team told fans in July to expect another name change when executives can find branding “that will enhance the standing of our proud, tradition-rich franchise and inspire our sponsors, fans and community for the next 100 years.”
