PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - U.S. Sen. Jack Reed sailed right past Tuesday’s Democratic primary unopposed and will face Republican Allen Waters in a quest for a fifth term in the November general election.
The 70-year-old Reed, first elected to the Senate in 1996, is a lawyer and military veteran who previously served in the House. He’s a senior member of the powerful Appropriations Committee, which controls the funding of the federal government.
Waters, an investment consultant, mounted unsuccessful campaigns for the state Senate and U.S. Senate in Massachusetts. He was also unopposed in the primary.
In June, the Rhode Island GOP took the unusual step of rescinding its endorsement of Waters after reports emerged that he allegedly had been involved in a domestic disturbance in 2019.
Rhode Island’s other U.S. senator, Democrat Sheldon Whitehouse, won a third term in 2018 and won’t be up for reelection again until 2024.
