BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Six parks across southwest Louisiana received heavy damage from Hurricane Laura and won’t be available for the Labor Day weekend holiday.
Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser, whose office oversees the state parks, said Sam Houston Jones State Park in Lake Charles, which took a direct blow from the hurricane, was wrecked by the storm.
In addition to Sam Houston State Park, five others are closed until further notice. Those include: Chicot State Park in Ville Platte, Lake D’Arbonne State Park in Farmerville, Lake Fausse Point State Park in St. Martinville, North Toledo Bend in Zwolle and South Toledo Bend in Anacoco.
Other parks suffered damage from Laura, which struck Louisiana on Aug. 27, but workers were able to get them up and running for the holiday weekend, Nungesser said.
“Many of our state parks lost power, large trees were downed over powerlines, but great efforts were made to keep campers safe and clear the debris in time for Labor Day weekend. If ever there was a time for us to gather with our families and show the world we are Louisiana Strong, this is it,” Nungesser said in a statement.
