PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A Providence police officer who helped save the life of an infant who had stopped breathing is getting an award from the city council.
The council on Thursday voted to award Officer Jose Deschamps the Municipal Medal for Deeds of Bravery, The Providence Journal reported.
Deschamps, a 25-year member of the force, was responding to a separate call in Washington Park last month when someone ran into the street shouting that a baby couldn’t breathe.
Deschamps performed chest compressions on the 8-month-old boy, and tore off his own face mask to give the baby mouth-to-mouth. The infant was taken to the hospital and later released.
“He’s such a great man and a great officer,” said Councilman John Igliozzi said.
Councilman Nicholas Narducci, one of the resolution’s sponsors, said that he is a strong supporter of police and believes more should be done to recognize them during a time when many people are critical of police.
