LAS VEGAS (AP) - A computer hacker group claimed it uploaded information stolen from a Nevada school district to a website.

The Clark County School District data the group claimed to have posted online included information on current and former employees with names and Social Security numbers, The Las Vegas Review-Journal reported Monday.

The hacker group, which was not named, claims all data stolen in an Aug. 27 cyberattack on the district was posted.

The district said in a statement Monday it plans to notify affected individuals as an investigation continues.

District officials did not answer questions about whether any money was paid to the group.

“CCSD is working diligently to determine the full nature and scope of the incident and is cooperating with law enforcement,” the district statement said.

Brett Callow, a threat analyst at cybersecurity company Emisoft, said the group behind the hack also targeted schools in Fairfax, Virginia, and Toledo, Ohio.

“One thing that should be kept in mind is that ransomware is only a problem because organizations pay ransoms. If nobody paid, there’d be no more ransomware,” Callow said.
