The test results confirmed the New York Giants’ worst fears.

Star running back Saquon Barkley tore his ACL and is out for the rest of the season, the Giants confirmed Monday. The 23-year-old suffered the injury in Sunday’s loss to the Chicago Bears.

Barkley was among the slew of notable players who got hurt in Week 2, joining San Francisco 49ers pass rusher Nick Bosa, 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, Carolina Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey and others.

The loss is a damaging blow to New York, which drafted Barkley second overall in 2018. The third-year back had often been the main engine of the Giants’ offense— winning offensive rookie of the year in 2018. He had back-to-back 1,000 rushing yard seasons.

The Giants are off to an 0-2 start under new coach Joe Judge.
