PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - The federal government is awarding Maine nearly a half-million dollars to reduce diesel emissions by targeting vehicles and boats to be retrofitted for cleaner energy sources.
The effort will help repower vessels and vehicles in the state and reduce emissions, said Democratic U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree. The grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will target marine vessels, short-haul freight trucks, school buses and electric trash haulers, she said.
The majority of the money will be used for marine vessels for engine replacement products, Pingree said.
The money will “assist in repowering vehicles across our state, reducing emissions in many different communities and putting our state on a good path towards net-zero emissions - a critical milestone we must meet in our effort to mitigate the climate crisis,” she said.
