HOPKINTON, Mass. (AP) - The U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded a $21 million grant to help overhaul and improve the heavily traveled interchange of Interstate 495 and the Massachusetts Turnpike in Hopkinton.

The grant announced recently by the state’s Congressional delegation is aimed at enhancing safety and addressing chronically deficient traffic conditions between “two of the most crucial highways in Massachusetts,” the delegation said in a statement, according to The Telegram & Gazette.

The interchange is used by nearly half of the freight trucks heading to eastern Massachusetts and serves as a major junction for commuter traffic, with approximately 75,000 vehicles passing through it every day.

On an average day, I-495 carries approximately 110,000 vehicles while the Turnpike accommodates 100,000 vehicles, the statement said.

The grant, called Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development, will help the Massachusetts Department of Transportation redesign and improve the junction as well as sections of I-495 and the Pike.
