BOSTON (AP) - The getaway driver during the armed robbery of a Massachusetts cellphone store who told his alleged accomplices to shoot at police during a high-speed pursuit has been sentenced to more than 22 years in prison, federal prosecutors said.
Diovanni Carter, 30, of Boston, was sentenced Thursday after his conviction in March on charges including robbery and discharge of a firearm during and in relation to the robbery, the U.S. attorney’s office in Boston said in a statement.
Carter drove three other men to the T-Mobile store in Brockton in January 2019, prosecutors said. He then waited outside as they pointed guns at the store manager, struck the manager in the head, and demanded cash and electronics, authorities said.
The thieves got away with about $25,000 in cash and electronics, prosecutors said.
During the ensuing chase that reached speeds as high as 70 mph on residential streets, Carter ordered his accomplices to shoot at police, prosecutors said. At least eight rounds were fired.
The suspects eventually abandoned the car and fled on foot. Carter was arrested a little over a month after the robbery, authorities said.
