BRISTOL, R.I. (AP) - A lawsuit accusing a decorated former Rhode Island town official of raping a boy in the 1970s has been dismissed.

The man accusing David E. Barboza of raping him multiple times as a child when Barboza was a police officer agreed to dismiss his lawsuit, the Boston Globe reported Wednesday.

No other information about the terms of the dismissal were available, the newspaper reported.

Barboza held many positions in Bristol and was employed by the town’s largest Roman Catholic parish for two decades until he resigned in the face of other allegations of child sexual abuse, the newspaper reported.

Investigations by the Boston Globe revealed accusations of sexual assault and misconduct by Barboza against children over decades. Barboza has not been convicted of any crimes.

An attorney for Barboza told the newspaper the dismissal of the lawsuit on Sept. 4 was to “the mutual satisfaction of everyone.”

The man who brought the lawsuit and his attorney declined to comment when contacted by the newspaper.

The Associated Press typically does not identify people alleging sexual assault.
