Washington defensive end Ryan Kerrigan was named the NFC defensive player of the week Wednesday for his performance against the Philadelphia Eagles — his first such award in his 10-year career.
Kerrigan was dominant against Philadelphia with two sacks, four quarterback pressures, two quarterback hits, two tackles for loss and a fumble recovery. Kerrigan’s two-sack performance pushed him past Dexter Manley to become Washington’s all-time sack leader with 92.
Remarkably, Kerrigan played just 22 snaps Sunday as Chase Young and Montez Sweat started over him.
Kerrigan is the first Washington player to earn the award since Week 6 of last season (Landon Collins).
Kerrigan’s 92 sacks are the fourth-most since he entered the league in 2011, trailing Denver’s Von Miller, Arizona’s Chandler Jones and Houston’s J.J. Watt.
“This is one of the older organizations in the NFL and to have the success that a lot of players that have come through this organization, to have my name up there with them now, it is awesome,” Kerrigan said of breaking Washington’s sack record. “I don’t think I could ever dream of anything like this. It is really special to me.”
