HERTFORD, N.C. (AP) - A small northeastern North Carolina town has issued an expansive curfew following three recent shootings that authorities say left one town resident dead and two injured.
Hertford Mayor Ernell Brown signed the curfew order, which lasts from 4 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. for people under 18 and from 9 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. for adults, The Virginian-Pilot of Norfolk reported.
“Hertford is experiencing an abundant number of recent shootings in our communities,” Brown said in a Facebook post. “This is very serious, and we offer our condolences and prayers to the victims and their families.”
Tuesday’s order, which expires in a week, does provide some exceptions for travel such as to work or doctor’s appointments.
Brown said the three shootings, which are being investigated by police, were likely committed by people from out of town. The mayor said unsolved drive-by shootings in Edenton in July and in Portsmouth, Virginia, last weekend contributed to the curfew decision.
Hertford, with 2,000 residents in Perquimans County, is 150 miles (241 kilometers) northeast of Raleigh.
