LAS VEGAS (AP) - Authorities say a 32-year-old man who was arrested after a deadly wrong-way crash on a Las Vegas-area freeway had a blood-alcohol content three times the legal limit.
Benjamin Joseph Ames appeared Tuesday before a judge in Henderson, where a prosecutor said the Hummer that Ames was driving was going about 100 mph (161 kph) when it slammed head-on into a Nissan Sentra little before 2 a.m. last Friday on U.S. 95 near Russell Road.
The driver of the Sentra, Susan Teves, 58, of Las Vegas, died in the crash.
Ames had a blood-alcohol content of 0.24%, according to court documents. The legal limit in Nevada is 0.08%.
Ames was not seriously hurt in the crash. He was not asked Tuesday to enter a plea.
The judge set bail at $250,000, and Ames remained Wednesday at the Clark County jail in Las Vegas pending a Sept. 29 preliminary hearing of evidence. He faces multiple charges including driving under the influence causing death and reckless driving.
A prosecutor told the judge that Ames had been placed on probation last month at sentencing after his conviction on assault with a weapon and domestic battery charges, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported.
