ST. LOUIS (AP) - A St. Louis police officer shot and injured a man he said pointed a gun at him, according to police.

The shooting happened shortly after 7 p.m. Sunday in the Greater Ville neighborhood following a car crash, television station KTVI reported. Two men in one of the crashed cars fled the scene on foot, and a police officer responding to the crash reported seeing two men running and chased them in his squad car, Police Chief John Hayden said.

The officer said that when the men reached a fence, one of them turned and pointed a gun at the officer. The officer then shot the man in an arm and his legs, police said. The 20-year-old man, whose name was not released, was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Police said the second man, who was not injured, was arrested. Police reported finding a gun on both suspects.

The officer’s name was not released, but Hayden said he is 30 years old and has been on the force for three years. He has been placed on administrative leave.
