The Washington Football Team will rename two main roads into its stadium and practice facility after team legends as the previous roads contained the word “Redskins.”
In Ashburn, the road leading to the team’s headquarters will be renamed Coach Gibbs Drive after former coach Joe Gibbs — replacing “Redskins Park Drive.” In Landover, Redskins Drive will be changed to Sean Taylor Road, named after the late safety who was killed in 2007.
The rebrands mark the latest changes Washington has made since the team announced in July that it would no longer use the Redskins moniker. The team now goes by the temporary “Washington Football Team” as it searches for a new name.
The streets will be officially renamed prior to Washington’s season-opener against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sept. 13, according to the team.
Owner Dan Snyder said in a press release that it was “imperative” that the team honor those who had a positive effect on the franchise.
“There are no two people more than deserving than Sean Taylor and Joe Gibbs,” he said.
Gibbs called the news an “amazing honor.” Washington’s official mailing address will now change to “2100 Coach Gibbs Drive” in Ashburn.
