FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (AP) - Search teams have so far been unsuccessful in their search for a kayaker who went missing on Virginia’s Rappahannock River.
Paige Pearson, a spokeswoman for the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources, told The Free Lance-Star that the search will start up again on Tuesday morning.
The male kayaker had left the Fredericksburg City Dock on Sunday with a female companion who was in another kayak. The woman had trouble controlling her kayak in the river’s current. The man tried to help but his own kayak flipped.
Pearson said the man was able to hold on to his own kayak briefly before letting go. The woman returned safely to shore.
Adam Lynch, a river steward with Friends of the Rappahannock, said the river’s water level is higher than normal from heavy rains and is unsafe for recreational use.
“We would not recommend anyone going out on the river for the next couple of days at least,” said Lynch.
