The Manchester, New Hampshire, police chief on Tuesday announced he is retiring at the end of the month after nearly 25 years with the police department.

Police Chief Carlo Capano wrote in a letter to the city’s mayor that he has had a very rewarding career, but decided that it would be best for him and his family to retire. It was not an easy decision, he wrote.

“Over my 24.5 year career with the City of Manchester, I have had some of the most incredible opportunities and experiences, many enjoyable moments and some very sad moments,” he wrote. “Overall, this has been an incredible journey and a time in my life I will never forget.”

Capano became chief in June 2018.

Mayor Joyce Craig said in a written statement that Capano had served the city of Manchester with distinction, “addressed challenges head-on, and proved time and time again the safety of our community was his number one priority.”

Capano implemented body cameras for all officers, added more community policing officers downtown and advocated for increased training, she wrote.
