Washington coach Ron Rivera told “Good Morning America” on Monday that he has three weeks left of cancer treatments.
Rivera’s treatment called for 35 sessions that included chemotherapy and proton therapy, spread across seven weeks (five days per week). He revealed on Aug. 20 that he had cancer found in the lymph node, calling it very treatable.
Rivera has coached through his fight with cancer, though the battle has appeared to visibly take its toll at times. During Sunday’s 31-17 loss to the Baltimore Ravens, the coach sat on the bench between timeouts to rest. He has also missed a few practices due to treatments and exhaustion.
Washington players donned “Rivera Strong” shirts prior to Sunday’s game. The team also had cardboard cutouts of Rivera’s family and friends in the stands to support the coach, raising $30,000 in the process for the American Cancer Society (each cutout cost $49).
Rivera told Robin Roberts that of his three weeks left in treatment, he has one chemotherapy session remaining.
“As Stuart Scott said,” Rivera said, referencing the late ESPN anchor, “you know, ’I have it. It doesn’t have me and it’s not how far I have to go, but how far I’ve gone.’”
