PHILADELPHIA — Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Matt Niskanen told the team Monday he would retire with a year left on his deal.
He had 33 points in 68 games for the Flyers last season.
Niskanen played five seasons with the Washington Capitals, and won a Stanley Cup with them in 2018.
“The Washington Capitals would like to congratulate Matt Niskanen on a successful career. Matt was an integral part of the Capitals for a number of years, was a crucial member of the Stanley Cup championship team and was a beloved member of the Washington community during his time in D.C. We wish him and his family all the best as he enters this next chapter,” the Capitals wrote in a statement and tweeted by the team.

Niskanen signed with the Capitals as a free agent in 2014. He scored 29 goals and had 127 assists for 156 points with the Capitals from 2014 to 2019. He played all 82 games in each of his first two seasons in Washington.
The Capitals traded Niskanen in June 2019 for Radko Gudas.
Niskanen’s retirement came the same day the Flyers signed defenseman Justin Braun to a two-year contract at an annual average of $1.8 million.
