LANDOVER — Washington players and coaches donned T-shirts on Sunday with the words “Rivera Strong” in support of coach Ron Rivera’s fight against cancer. The team also surprised Rivera with more than 400 cutouts of his family and friends in the stands of FedEx Field.
Prior to Sunday’s game against the Baltimore Ravens, Washington charged $49 per cutout — the late Bobby Mitchell’s old number — and donated the money to the American Cancer Society. In total, Washington raised around $30,000 for the organization.
Buffalo Bills coach Sean McDermott, Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid and former Panthers linebacker Luke Kuechly were among those who purchased a cutout in support of Rivera.
Rivera, who has a form of skin cancer found in the lymph node, missed two days of practice leading up to Sunday’s game as he recovers from his treatments. Rivera said Friday that the treatments have been tough on him physically.
“The last three days — Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday — were a bit of a bear,” Rivera said.
