“Borat” star Sacha Baron Cohen labeled President Trump an “existential threat to democracy” Tuesday in a social media post urging Americans to vote in next week’s elections.
Mr. Baron Cohen, a British-born actor who stars in and produced the newly released “Borat” sequel, tore into Mr. Trump on Twitter in the latest back-and-forth between the two.
“Donald Trump says I’m a creep. I say he’s an existential threat to democracy,” Mr. Baron Cohen, 49, said on Twitter.
“That’s why I released Borat before the election,” Mr. Baron Cohen said in the tweet. “There’s only one week left. Please VOTE! (Or you will be execute)”.
Mr. Baron Cohen plays the title role in his latest offering, “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm,” a Kazakhstani reporter tasked with delivering a “prodigious bribe” to the White House.
The movie pokes fun at American culture and particularly Mr. Trump at times, and it includes a scene that shows his lawyer, Rudolph W. Giuliani, in a compromising situation.
Asked about the film last week, Mr. Trump called Mr. Baron Cohen a “phony” and said he personally does not find him funny, White House reporter Steve Herman relayed afterward.
“To me, he’s a creep,” Mr. Trump said about the “Borat” star Friday, the journalist reported on Twitter.
The film, the sequel to 2006’s “2006’s Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan,” became available Thursday exclusively through Amazon.
Amazon said “tens of millions” of viewers saw the movie this weekend, while analytics firm Samba TV estimated U.S. viewership at 1.6 million households, Variety reported Tuesday.
