STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) - Oklahoma State University President Burns Hargis on Friday announced his plans to retire at the end of the current academic year.
“The opportunity to be president of my alma mater has exceeded most everything else,” Hargis, 74, said in a video statement announcing his retirement, effective July 1, after 13 years leading the university.

Hargis is credited with leading an expansion that included new and renovated campus facilities and fundraising campaigns that raised $2.2 billion during his tenure.
Hargis, a 1967 graduate of Oklahoma State, was an Oklahoma banker and lawyer and when he was named university president in 2008. He had resigned from the university’s board of regents to seek the presidency following the resignation of David Schmidly.
