By Associated Press - Thursday, October 15, 2020

PHOENIX (AP) - The Arizona Daily Star and the Casa Grande Dispatch have won top honors in the Arizona Newspapers Association’s annual awards announced Thursday.

The Arizona Daily Star earned Arizona Newspaper of the Year in the daily category. The Casa Grande Dispatch won for non-dailies.

Ian James and Rob O’Dell of The Arizona Republic were awarded 2020 Journalists of the Year in the daily newspapers category. Genesis Lara of the Nogales International won in the non-daily category.

The Arizona Republic’s Mary Jo Pitzel and David Wallace earned Story of the Year among dailies for their documentary on Arizona’s child welfare system, “They Have Names.”

Krista Allen of the Navajo Times won Story of the Year for non-dailies for coverage of the Navajo Generating Station.

Kelly Presnell of the Arizona Daily Star and Arianna Grainey of the Scottsdale Independent won Photographer of the Year awards. It is Presnell’s third consecutive year receiving the honor.

A total of 32 newspapers submitted 745 entries. They were judged by the New Mexico Press Association and The Associated Press West Regional bureau.

Because of the pandemic, the awards were given via Facebook livestream Thursday from a Kramer Media facility in Casa Grande.
