BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Nearly a year after its system president exited the job, Louisiana State University’s governing board Wednesday announced the creation of a 20-member search committee to select a new leader.
However, it remains unclear whether the LSU Board of Supervisors’ search committee will be looking for someone to work both as system president and chancellor of the main campus in Baton Rouge - or will want two separate leaders.
The committee will “prepare a position description” and recommend which structure it suggests, for consideration at the Board of Supervisors’ Oct. 23 meeting. The search committee includes members of the LSU board, professors, an athletics official, a student government leader and other academic and university officials.
“We are ready to move forward, and we fully intend to conduct a thorough, yet expeditious, search process,” Robert Dampf, LSU board chairman, said in a statement.
Former System President F. King Alexander announced in December that he was leaving the position to lead Oregon State University. Tom Galligan, dean of LSU’s law school, has been working as interim president since January and told The Advocate on Wednesday that he’ll apply for the permanent position no matter how the job is structured.
The LSU Board of Supervisors in 2012 merged the positions of system president and chancellor of the flagship university campus. Alexander was hired to fill both roles.
