Former President Barack Obama congratulated Alex Smith after the Washington quarterback completed his comeback from a horrific leg injury by playing his first football game in two years on Sunday.
Obama tweeted that Smith’s return is “a testament to his strength, determination and the love and support of his family.” Obama also indicated the two were friends.
“And congratulations to my friend Alex Smith, for fighting back from a life-threatening injury to start at quarterback again for the Washington Football Team,” Obama tweeted. “It’s a testament to his strength, determination and the love and support of his family.”

Smith threw for 37 yards in Washington’s 30-10 loss to the Rams. He entered the game with two minutes left in the first half after starter Kyle Allen exited with an arm injury. It was Smith’s first action since breaking his leg in November 2018, an injury that required 17 surgeries. During his recovery, Smith developed an infection that threatened his life.
