Washington quarterback Kyle Allen will meet with the team’s doctors Monday to discuss surgery options for his dislocated left ankle, coach Ron Rivera said.
Allen suffered a small fracture in his ankle during the first quarter of Sunday’s 23-20 loss to the New York Giants. Multiple reports indicate that Allen will need surgery and could possibly miss the rest of the season.
Rivera, however, said it was “premature” to declare the quarterback out for the year.
Allen’s absence leaves Washington with veteran Alex Smith as its starter. Smith, of course, is two years removed from his own serious leg injury, but he has continued to progress. In his second outing of the year, Smith threw for 325 yards for a touchdown and three interceptions.
Posting on Instagram, Allen thanked fans for the support after his injury.
“This is the unfortunate part of the game we play, but there’s no adversity you can’t overcome!!” Allen wrote. I promise I’ll be back stronger, and better because of it. Loved every second of my first year in Washington, I can’t wait for more!”
Allen, who replaced 2019 first-rounder Dwayne Haskins, started four games for Washington, two of which were cut short because of injury. He completed 69% of his passes for 610 yards, four touchdowns and one interception.
