BOSTON (AP) - A rookie Massachusetts State Police trooper has been fired for allegedly using racial slurs during an off-duty confrontation, the agency said in a statement.

The male trooper “approached a male in a stationary vehicle” in Revere last weekend, the agency said Tuesday. No additional details of the confrontation were disclosed.

The trooper was a member of the recruit class that graduated in May and was still under his one-year probationary period.

“I am disgusted and disappointed by the conduct that occurred, which is the antithesis of the standards of conduct and personal behavior we expect and demand of our members,” department commander Col. Christopher Mason said in the statement. “The action taken today underscores the position I have affirmed since I became Colonel, specifically, that we will have no tolerance for such conduct and will move to resolve such matters as quickly as possible.”

The trooper’s name was not made public, but the department said he worked out of the Danvers barracks.

State police continue to investigate and the matter has been referred to the state attorney general’s office for investigation and possible prosecution.
