ALBERT LEA, Minn. (AP) - The man who shot and injured three people in Albert Lea, including a police officer, was also wounded when a state trooper opened fire, according to state investigators.
The 21-year-old man suffered shrapnel injuries and was treated at Mayo Clinic Hospital-St. Marys in Rochester, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension said.
Officers responded to the shooting at the Shady Oaks apartment building early Sunday and found the officer had been hit in his bullet-resistant vest. He was taken to Mayo in Albert Lea for treatment of injuries that were not life threatening, according to the BCA.
Two men, ages 52 and 38, were airlifted to the Rochester hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
Authorities did not say what prompted the man to open fire at the apartment building. The suspect was arrested after a nearly 9-hour standoff with law enforcement officers.
Some nearby residents were evacuated to a church until the suspect was arrested, police said.
As tactical officers were evacuating the building, they discovered a body in one of the apartments, the BCA said. The death is not related to the active shooter incident and the cause and manner of death are under investigation, officials said.
The state trooper who fired his or her weapon is on standard administrative leave.
