Wichita police and the U.S. Marshals Service have arrested a suspect in the shooting death last month of a former Pittsburg State University basketball player outside a sports stadium where a youth football game was being played.
Maurice Hall, 23, of Garland, Texas, was arrested Tuesday morning during a vehicle stop, Wichita police officer Kevin Wheeler said in a news release. Hall was booked on first-degree murder and other charges, The Wichita Eagle reported.
Police said the Oct. 21 shooting death of 31-year-old Marquell Nolen stemmed from an ongoing feud between Nolen and Hall.
“The investigation revealed Nolen was at the Sports Complex, and a verbal argument ensued between him and Hall on the west side of the stadium bleachers,” Wheeler said. “During the argument, Hall pulled out a handgun and fired multiple shots, striking Nolen.“
“This was not a random incident, and Hall and Nolen were known to each other,” Wheeler said.
Nolen was the 2013 MIAA defensive player of the year his senior season at Pittsburg State.
The league that organized the game, Capital Sports Institute, canceled the remainder of its 2020 youth football season following the shooting, although police said the shooting was not related to the game.
