CULPEPER, Va. (AP) - A sheriff’s deputy in Virginia fatally shot a man Thursday when law enforcement responded to a home after receiving a report of a domestic dispute, authorities said.
The shooting happened around 2:40 p.m. in Culpeper, about 30 minutes after law enforcement arrived on scene and found Ellis A. Frye Jr. sitting on the porch with a firearm, Virginia State Police said. Authorities said officers tried to deescalate the situation while Frye went in and out of the home and produced more firearms.
The deputy shot Frye as he began to move toward the officers while still armed, the State Police said. Frye, 62, of Culpeper, was taken to a hospital, where he died of his injuries.
Authorities said no law enforcement officers were injured. They said the shooting remains under investigation and an autopsy is pending.
The State Police did not release the name of the deputy who shot Frye.
